Are Fake Advocates On The Rise?
The problem of fake advocates is growing fast, especially in healthcare. Rental housing operators were early entrants into crafting advocacy for their tenants. In the 1960’s it was known as pre-canned and sell-out advocacy. My first up close look at how fake advocates work was in New York city. In this case the landlord brought in a friend to start a tenant’s association that would ultimately be controlled by the landlord. For 38 years every call for direct action, class action and redress was met with impediments inserted by the landlord’s friend in the tenant’s association. Next, I would see political lobbyists using the same tactic of offering victims and potential victims pre-canned advocacy without using their firsthand answers.
Consider the innocent individuals that go to these unvetted
advocates seeking help. That interaction has disengaged and underserved individuals
seeking advocacy as far back as I can remember. What we see today is a result
of accumulated apathy as a direct result of unvetted and company store
advocates taking the lead in addressing the lived experiences of others. The actual
outcomes may never be known because there was never an agreement or organized
follow-up. Yet, these hired and self-appointed advocates have been allowed to
promote their skills and talents without rules, agreements and outcome
validations.
You would think after years of critical concerns raised by
individuals there would be at least an increase in individuals learning about
and engaging in organized advocacy. But we learned that the absence of connectible
firsthand answers and freestyle advocacy was rearranging the accuracy and the benefits
of membership in advocacy reinforcement groups and organizations. At the
realization of what we were learning, it became clear and urgent for mate3
networkers to connect firsthand answers, and then we started seeing the accelerated
engagement.
Advocacy reform is a self-effectuating movement that is
still being built at the expense of the unheard and undermined victims. At
mate3 we use AI to help spot and root out barriers to including firsthand
answers as a crucial component to organized advocacy. Our networkers have
learned that beforehand communication agreements must be the main prerequisite before
applying remedies for someone else’s lived experience.
